Hindi Bollywood Music - An Interesting History
Music transcends all geographic barriers. It has no cultural , religious and ethnic boundaries- and depending on one's taste, it touches the very inner core of our souls. This musical montage with melody as the leitmotif at times charges us up helping us shape our attitudes and at other times, brings sweet memories back to lighten up our day. I have been a big follower of Hindi music ever since I can remember. Being also classically trained in Carnatic music, a form of Indian classical music, I have a deep connection with Indian music.
Bollywood music has had a long interesting journey. Starting with the 50's and 60's where actors and actresses sung their own songs. The 70's and 80's were marked by Lata Mangeshkar's timeless melodies, Mohd. Rafi's butter-sweet voice and R.D. Burman's ahead-of-their-times dance numbers. The 90's were, to me, a phase of transition for Bollywood music where the influence of western music and instruments gradually increased and brought with it, several new flavors. The term Indi-pop got coined in that time as well starting a whole new era where artists could now release their own music albums. It is hard to believe that prior to the 90's there were very few mainstream Hindi music albums and the popular music was generally from Bollywood movies.
The new millennium stands for the most amount of creativity that I have seen in Hindi music. Composers took the liberty to combine flavors of American, Spanish, Italian, Portugese, Urdu, Arabic and several other countries and created beautiful blends - never before seen in Bollywood. The most successful componser in the new millennium has been A.R. Rehman. His music was the perfect blend of the West and the East but with the Indian flavor that made it so different. Album after album and movie after movie that be composed for were hits and to this day, he is the most successful composer of our times. His most memorable albums are Roja, Bombay, Vande Mataram and most recently Guru.
The future holds a lot more for Bollywood music. Today, hindi music plays on radio around the world. The top Indian composers are in international demand and compose music for movies and albums in Hollywood and Europe as well. With Indian models getting recognition in recent years, Aishwarya Rai was Miss World and Sushmita Sen was Miss Universe) and movie hits such as Bend It Like Beckham and Monsoon Weddind directed by Indians, they are definitely on the verge of taking off in a big way.
But that is only scratching the surface. Indian music has a 5000 year heritage, longer than most other forms of music and there are hundreds of music forms in India that are unexplored and unseen by the rest of the world. The next couple of decades will see Indian music gain prominence in the world arena. With the availability of portals such as YouTube, releasing music has never been easier.
