Music Can Change Our Lives
Music definitely plays a part in our lives. A man who sings at his work will do more in the same time; he will do it better; he will persevere longer. We scarcely notice our fatigue while we march to music. We row and hoe to music. We exercise, garden and have gone into battle to music.
Roberta Guaspari is a woman who started and still maintains a music performance program for kids in East Harlem. Music of the Heart, is a Miramax film based on her real-life story. This movie shows the teachers strength and spirit in overcoming adversity. The friendships that were formed through music helped her accomplish her goal. It reveals the way that the kids and community benefit from her efforts and have their lives changed.
Our language and reasoning may have been aided by early musical training. It is believed that there is also a link between music and the ability to perceive the world accurately and visualize various elements that should go together. Parents are led by recent studies to believe that their children will achieve higher grades in school through music. Changes in the behavior of autistic children show that they have been able to break through communication barriers with song and music.
At the American Music Awards, January 28th, 1985, various entertainers got together to record "We Are the World". Quincy Jones was lined up as the producer and Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie were the song writers. 800,000 copies arrived in stores on Tuesday, March 7th, 1985 and were sold out by the first weekend. This song won Grammys in 1985 for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
This may have been the impetus for a study of the arts that provides children with an internal glimpse of other cultures and teaches them to be empathetic towards the people of these cultures. The challenge is to change from the development of greed and a "me first" attitude to create a development of compassion and empathy providing a bridge across cultural divides. Hopefully, this change leads to respect of other races at an early age.
Teamwork skills and discipline are enhanced by music. Corporations have theme songs to instill pride and fellowship at conventions. Singing is a means of self-expression. Self-esteem is a by-product of this self-expression. Music study develops skills that are necessary in the workplace. By focusing on "doing," as opposed to observing, music teaches us how to perform, literally, anywhere in the world.
Multi-dimensional workers with the sort of flexible and supple intellects that music education helps to create attract employers. In the music classroom, students can also learn to better communicate and cooperate with one another.
Young people as well as old can learn to conquer fear and to take risks through musical performance. Although a little anxiety is a good thing which may occur often in life, dealing with it early and often makes it less of a problem later. Risk-taking is essential if we are going to fully develop our potential. We have watched performers on "American Idol" change the course of their lives by facing the risk of rejection with their musical performances.
Pets in shelters are calmed by music. Canine Lullabies is Heartbeat Music Therapy which calms puppies and dogs. This music has been shown to reduce separation anxiety, stop or decrease barking, console whimpering puppies, comfort sick or hurt dogs and settle hyperactivity. Teams of farm horses have worn bells. Many of us have seen the Budweiser Clydesdales and heard the music of their bells in the commercials. A horse is a generous, noble-spirited animal with intellect and he is capable of much enjoyment from music. Horse show competitors are aided by the tempo of the music that is played by the organist as their steeds respond to the volume and beat of the music.
Gardeners grow their gardens better with music. Theme music can be found online at "how to be a gardener."
Some people move through life as a band of music moves down the street, flinging out pleasures on every side, through the air, to everyone far and near who can listen. Others fill the air with harsh clang and clangor. Many people go through life cursing and showing their temper. Their whole disposition is so that wherever they go, others dread them. A peaceful neighborhood can be disturbed by a car's booming speakers that interrupts our harmony and the vibrations can literally be felt through the soles of our feet resulting in the energy flowing upward and creating a frown on our faces. Will you use music to change the course of your life by bringing inner peace and attracting financial freedom to you just by singing or listening to music a few minutes each day?
